Review | Bourjois Volume Fast & Perfect Mascara

Thursday 9 May 2013

I have been lacking a bit of blog inspiration this week so I decided to ask my sister if she had any spare bits of makeup lying around that she fancied passing off to me to have a play with. Fortunately, she had a few mascaras so I thought I'd test them out and give my little ol' opinion on my bloggy.

The first one that I decided to give a whirl - quite literally, is the Bourjois Volume Fast & Perfect Mascara. I was enticed by this one as it has a rather interesting feature, the brush rotates! You flick the switch on the lid either left for applying it to the base of your top lashes or right for doing the top side, if that makes sense. This just gives a more even coverage upon application.

Normally I'm not a fan of bristle brushes, I find them quite hard to work with and end up smearing mascara all over my eyelid and under my eyes. Not a good look. This brush however, I really quite enjoyed using much to my surprise and found the rotating function really useful. It worked fantastically at coating all of my eyelashes evenly and without any tugging or pulling which I was slightly concerned about.

The packaging is rather chunky for mascara as it has to hold the battery for the rotating wand. It's not particularly an issue though as I didn't find it heavy or awkward to hold at all. I'm not really a huge "packaging" person, if it's ugly but it works well that's fine by me.

I was pretty pleased with how my lashes were looking after the initial coat, it was only upon the second coat that I was slightly disappointed. I found that it applied quite clumpily and I had a couple of blobby bits where my eyelashes were stuck together. The drying time was a little longer than I'd like and when I came to apply my eyeliner afterwards, it kind of stuck them all together despite waiting a couple of minutes for them to dry.
I also found that the rotating function was pretty useless on my bottom lashes as it just didn't seem to want to coat them, I ended up having to use it like a normal mascara wand.

As for wear throughout the day, I did get a couple of small smudge marks beneath my eyes but they weren't a huge issue and it was rather windy and rainy outside which definitely didn't help, the mascara doesn't claim to be waterproof. After I'd rubbed the initial smudges away I didn't get anymore for the rest of the day despite going back out in the weather and I didn't get any flaking.

Overall, I think the brush is a brilliant idea and I was really impressed with it but the formula could do with a little work. It all depends on exactly what you look for in a mascara but for me, I'd prefer a little bit more of everything - volume, length and curl. For the rather expensive price of £11.99 at Superdrug, I don't think that I would purchase this for myself but I'd be interested in it if they had a look at the formula.

  1. I love your photos. They look really nice. I am a bit scared of rotating brushes myself...I get scared they will tangle with my precious eye lashes.

Can I ask how you got rid of those pesky grey borders. Mine seem stuck! kjfsdokjgsedj!

    1. Thanks! I just use a little filter on picmonkey to make them look a bit less drab, unless I'm showing a swatch! I was terrified I'd end up with chunks missing out of my lashes but it was fine, no tugging at all! And I'll pop you across the link I used to remove them, they are annoying! x
