Healthy Eating & Weight Loss Tips - Breakfast

Sunday 26 May 2013

After posting about my weight loss the other week, I thought it might be handy to elaborate on what I actually ate to drop the weight.
I made sure that I was eating breakfast, lunch and tea every single day and if I was hungry in between, then a healthy snack. I am going to post about each meal separately over the next couple of weeks. Most of these posts are likely to be scheduled as I'm due my baby boy any day now and I'll be spending rather a lot of time with him as you can imagine!

When I was losing the weight, my main choice each day was just Kellogg's All Bran Cereal with skimmed milk and  occasionally topped with a handful of raisins just for a bit of extra flavour. The raisins do add a few extra calories due to the high sugar content but if you're only having a few, they're certainly still healthy and count towards your 5-a-day.

I am a huge fan of fruit juice - orange in particular, I really can't get enough of it! Before starting my diet, I would actually go to the shops and buy the 1 litre cartons on offer and easily drink 2 in one evening... the sugar content is extremely high in fruit juice so I limited myself to only 1 medium sized glass per day with my breakfast. It's best to pick the orange juice (or juice of your choice) that has bits in, as that also counts towards your 5-a-day and I just personally find it more satisfying.

If I fancied a change (I can easily eat the same food over and over again without getting bored) then I would make myself scrambled eggs on 1 slice of wholemeal toast with a thin spread of 'light' butter as the protein in the egg would help keep me fuller for longer. I never ditched the yolk as it's my favourite part of the egg and also it's really the main bit with any actual nutrients in it. Again, I'd have my one glass of fruit juice with this.

Another great option for breakfast is porridge (although not a personal favourite of mine!) as it slowly releases energy throughout the morning. You could top this with fruit such as bananas, blueberries, strawberries... anything you like really! I'm planning on trying to convert to this when baby arrives as I'll need all the energy I can get!

If you're not really feeling like much food in the morning, then a fruit smoothie can be a great option. I buy a container of frozen fruit - usually forest fruits or summer berries and blend this up with a couple of tablespoons of low fat yoghurt, a tumbler of fruit juice and 3 or 4 ice cubes.

However, doing healthy eating doesn't mean that you can't indulge in something a little more meaty and satisfying, I referred to Slimming World magazines for quite a lot of my inspiration and they have a great little recipe here which means you can still enjoy a Full English Breakfast and not feel guilty!

So, that's a few little things that I did to manage my diet and lose weight. Do you have any other nice meals that you've eaten whilst trying to drop the pounds?

  3. Might have to have a look at that full english recipe - sometimes diets can be so dull. I have found eaten lots of egg whites works well for me - omlettes and scrambled eggs galore! x

    1. I know, it's hard to keep at a diet when you deprive yourself of all the foods you like! I love scrambled eggs but never make too many omelettes, I should give it a go! x

  7. I try eating fresh fruit and nuts as a snack but often reach for biscuits etc. I just recently started ordering a graze.com box once a fortnight. There a great treat and fairly healthy :) xx
